NYC Building Code §§ BC 3307–3309 (Chapter 33)
NYC Building Code Chapter 33 requires protection of pedestrians and adjoining property during construction and demolition: Section 3307 (Protection of Pedestrians) governs sidewalk sheds, construction fences, foot and vehicle bridges, catch platforms, and railings, while Section 3308 (Overhead and Unenclosed Perimeter Protection) governs overhead/perimeter protection and safety netting. Under Section 3307.6, sidewalk-shed decking must extend 5 feet beyond the required protection zone where the work or unenclosed perimeter being protected is 100 feet or less above grade, and 20 feet on both ends beyond that zone where it is more than 100 feet above grade (or to within 18 inches of the curb line, whichever is less). Per Section 3306.2, demolition operations may not commence until the applicable pedestrian and adjoining-property protection required by Sections 3307, 3308, and 3309 is in place.
