Local Law 157 of 2016, as amended by Local Law 102 of 2025 (Int. 1281-2025); NYC Admin. Code §28-315.2.4 / §27-2045 — natural gas detecting devices
Local Law 157 of 2016 amended the NYC Housing Maintenance Code and Building Code to require owners to install and maintain natural gas detecting devices in dwelling units of covered residential buildings (Class A and Class B multiple dwellings and certain private dwellings with gas service). The original May 1, 2025 compliance deadline was postponed to no earlier than January 1, 2027 by Local Law 102 of 2025 (Int. 1281-2025), which also requires DOB to assess battery-powered alarm market availability by July 1, 2026 and auto-extends the deadline to January 1, 2029 if fewer than four compliant manufacturers exist. Compliant detectors must meet NFPA 715 and be UL-listed (UL 1484 or UL 2075).
