Suffolk County Department of Health Services regulation to protect Long Island's sole-source aquifer that controls the storage, handling, and use of restricted toxic or hazardous materials. Facilities within designated Groundwater Management Zones that store regulated materials must obtain a Department permit (unless exempt), and on-site storage is capped based on facility size (generally not exceeding 250 gallons, or 0.0125 gallons per square foot for facilities over 20,000 square feet). Permitted facilities must provide secondary containment, leak detection, and overfill protection.
