OSHA Confined Spaces in Construction (Subpart AA)

29 CFR 1926.1201

Section 1926.1201 is the "Scope" provision of OSHA's Confined Spaces in Construction standard (29 CFR Part 1926, Subpart AA). It sets the requirement that practices and procedures protect employees engaged in construction activities at a worksite with one or more confined spaces (e.g., bins, pits, manholes, tanks, sewers, transformer vaults, storm drains), and it excludes construction work already regulated by Subpart P (Excavations), Subpart S (Underground Construction, Caissons, Cofferdams and Compressed Air), and Subpart Y (Diving). The substantive program requirements the proposal described — written permit-space program, atmospheric testing, designating entrants/attendants/supervisors, rescue services, and multi-employer coordination — are real Subpart AA obligations but are set out in other sections (§§ 1926.1203–1926.1211), not in § 1926.1201.
