N.J.S.A. 46:8-49.2
A landlord must provide a printed or emailed receipt to a tenant for each cash payment made for any amount due under a residential lease, renewal, or extension. The receipt must accurately state the amount of the payment, its purpose, when it was received, the printed or typed names of both the landlord and tenant, and who accepted the payment. Violations are subject to the penalty provisions of N.J.S.A. 46:8-47, with escalating add-ons of $100 more for a second violation and $200 more for each subsequent violation within a five-year period.
