NYC Admin. Code § 27-2004 (Housing Maintenance Code — Definitions)
NYC Administrative Code § 27-2004 (Housing Maintenance Code definitions) defines a class A multiple dwelling as one occupied for permanent residence purposes — meaning occupancy of a dwelling unit by the same person or family for thirty consecutive days or more — and provides that a class A multiple dwelling shall only be used for permanent residence purposes. It defines a class B multiple dwelling as one occupied transiently (e.g., hotels, rooming houses, lodging houses, and boarding houses), paralleling the definitions in the New York Multiple Dwelling Law. This language was added by Chapter 225 of the Laws of 2010 (the "illegal hotel law") and is currently active, not proposed.
