R.C.S.A. §§ 19-13-B103a to 19-13-B103f (Connecticut Public Health Code)
Under the Connecticut Public Health Code, a building not served by a public sewer must dispose of sewage through a subsurface sewage disposal (septic) system, defined as consisting of a house sewer, a septic tank followed by a leaching system, and any necessary pumps, siphons, and groundwater control. These sections govern household and small commercial systems with a design flow of 5,000 gallons per day or less, which are designed, installed, and operated per the Commissioner's Technical Standards. Permits are issued by the local director of health, but plans for any system serving a building with a designed sewage flow of 2,000 gallons per day or greater must first be approved by the Commissioner of Public Health.
