NYC Admin Code § 16-308.1

Local Law 85 of 2023 (§ 16-308.1, mandatory residential source-separation of organic waste — distinct from the 2013 commercial-organics § 16-306.1) requires curbside composting for all residential buildings citywide; buildings with 4+ units must provide labeled bins. Mandatory fines began April 1, 2025 (1–8 units $25/$50/$100; 9+ units $100/$200/$300); after an enforcement pause, across-the-board enforcement resumed Jan 1, 2026 (warnings-first).
