What Is a Building Information Number (BIN)?

A Building Information Number (BIN) is a unique 7-digit identifier assigned by the NYC Department of Buildings to each building structure in the city. While a BBL (Borough-Block-Lot) identifies a tax lot, a BIN identifies a specific building. This distinction matters because a single lot may contain multiple buildings, each with its own BIN.

BIN vs. BBL

The BBL identifies the land (tax lot). The BIN identifies the physical building. A large lot with a main building and a detached garage may have two BINs but only one BBL. Conversely, a building spanning multiple lots still has one BIN. Understanding this difference is important when searching DOB records.

How BINs Are Assigned

DOB assigns BINs when a new building is constructed or when an existing building is first registered in the system. The BIN persists throughout the building life, even through renovations and ownership changes. When a building is demolished, the BIN is retired.

Using BINs for Research

Searching DOB records by BIN is the most precise method, especially for properties with multiple buildings. All permits, violations, complaints, and inspections are associated with a specific BIN. When you search by address, the system may return multiple BINs if there are several structures on the lot.

Finding a BIN

You can find a building BIN through DOB NOW or the legacy BIS (search by address and the BIN will be displayed), the NYC GIS Zoning Map, or RegWatch. The BIN also appears on DOB permits, violation notices, and inspection reports.
